Clarkson Primary School is an independent public school located in Clarkson, WA. Their students come from a variety of backgrounds with a high proportion identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

The school identified a decline in the core strength, catching and throwing ability, balance and body awareness of their students. Clarkson Primary School partnered with the KIDDO Program to implement fundamental movement skills education in their school. This ensured all their students had the support they needed to meet physical activity goals. The KIDDO Program gave their students the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to lead physically active and healthy lives.

Healthway funding supported Clarkson Primary School’s KIDDO whole school membership for two years, equipment starter packs, fundamental movement skill assessments, lesson plans, parent engagement tools and resources, and two tickets to the KIDDO conference.

Project activities:

  • Professional development for teachers to embed fundamental movement skills education across the school day, not just in physical education class.
  • Assessed fundamental movement skills of kindergarten to year 2 students pre and post KIDDDO.
  • Engaged with the school community through social media and communication channels about leading healthy and active lives.
  • Adding movement ‘brain breaks’ into the school day to increase physical activity and student focus.

Sustainability:

  • The school purchased a KIDDO membership, which allowed for two years of support. This ensured the program could be fully integrated into the school curriculum and across the school community.
  • Support from school administrators ensured the KIDDO program could be successfully implemented.
