Health Promotion Research funds innovative and collaborative research that builds the evidence base and builds research capacity through fellowships and scholarships. Our funding is prioritised to the health areas and population groups outlined in our Strategic Plan 2024-2029 Creating a healthier Western Australia together.
Applicants are encouraged to focus on at least one of our five priority health areas; promote health eating, promote active living, promote mental wellbeing, prevent and reduce use of tobacco, e-cigarettes and other novel tobacco products and prevent and reduce use of alcohol.
Our funding is prioritised to our five priority health areas however we will accept requests that address other health promotion related issues.
Health Promotion Research categories
Our Intervention Research Grants support projects that will develop and test, or inform a new health promotion program or policy intervention. We will provide up to $200,000 per annum for three years ($600,000 in total).
Our Exploratory Research Grants support exploratory or formative studies to address gaps in health promotion research, demonstrating the potential to influence health promotion in WA. We will provide up to $100,000 over two years for these grants which may lead to the development of larger studies to trial interventions.
Our Research Fellowship grants are designed to increase the number of experienced and trained researchers working in health promotion research in WA. Candidates can apply for an Early Career or Senior Research Fellowship for up to three years to undertake their research project.
We offer one funding round for Research Fellowships per year, which opens in February.
Our Health Promotion Research Scholarships fund postgraduate students studying for a master’s or PhD degree. We’ll assist candidates in obtaining formal academic training for postgraduate degrees in a field directly relevant to health promotion, through an approved tertiary institution.

Our Aboriginal Health Research Scholarships are designed to increase the number of experienced and trained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practitioners and researchers working in health promotion in WA. We’ll support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates in obtaining postgraduate formal academic training through approved tertiary institutions.
We offer one funding round for Aboriginal Health Research Scholarships per year, which opens in February.
Visiting Fellow grants are for organisations wishing to bring a leading expert in health promotion research or practice to WA for up to three months. The primary focus of the Fellows visit should be to work closely with key health promotion teams to support and inform their work, and to increase the skills and expertise for delivering evidence-based health promotion across WA.
