Supermarkets under junk food spotlight – new report

Supermarkets can do a lot more when it comes to policies on consumers purchasing healthier food and drinks, a new report has revealed. The Inside our Supermarkets Report was launched this month, providing an update on progress with supermarket policies that enable Australians to purchase and consume healthier food and drinks. Research conducted at the Global Centre for Preventive Health and Nutrition (GLOBE) at Deakin University found that while Australia’s big four supermarket chains have improved some of their nutrition-related policies and practices over the last five years, more substantial action is needed to help Australians improve their diets.  Priorities for action include supermarkets setting targets to increase sales for health products; increasing the affordability of healthy food; limiting price promotions on unhealthy products; and making all checkouts junk food free.
