Parent education event

The school recognised students were being exposed to unhealthy drinking habits and identified that students were at risks of early alcohol use, which has negative effects on on learning and development.

The Parent Education Event aimed to strengthen families’ knowledge and confidence in guiding young people toward safer decisions.

Project activities included:

  • Expert partnership: Working with the Road Safety and Drug Education Branch (RSDE) for tailored advice and resources.
  • Community information sessions: Two evening events with an RSDE consultant speaking about alcohol harms in young people.
  • Teacher professional learning: RSDE‑led training for health and physical education teachers, who then created classroom lessons using Challenges and Choices.

Sustainability:

To ensure long‑term, positive change the school will:

  • Strengthen policy: A health promotion committee is developing an alcohol policy that prevents alcohol use at school events and removes alcohol from fundraising activities and staff/parent awards.
  • Embed learning: Challenges and Choices resources will remain part of the school curriculum.

*Please note the above initiative is not a real case study, however it is a project a school could implement. In this case Healthway would contribute funding towards teacher professional development and relief time, hosting parents evening sessions, and activities and other resources for classrooms.
